The SUBSTR SQL Function in MySQL and MariaDB - String part |
|
| SUBSTR | Syntax: | SUBSTR(String, Position, Length) SUBSTR(String FROM Position [FOR Length]) | Return value: | CHAR | Synonyms: | MID, SUBSTRING | Function type: | String function | |
| | The SUBSTR() function returns a part of "String" starting at "Position" with "Length".
The arguments can also be specified using the FROM and FOR keywords.
If the "Length" argument is not specified, the function returns the remainder string starting at "Position".
If length is 0 or negative, the function returns an empty string.
If "Length" is not specified and "Position" is negative, SUBSTR() returns a string from the right of "String" with the number of characters from the positive value of "Position".
Numeric values of "String" are interpreted as character strings.
If either argument is NULL, the SUBSTR() function returns NULL. | SQL Examples for the SUBSTR function |

SUBSTR() is useful when a portion of a string needs to be extracted based on a specific position and length, for example for data manipulation or to generate custom output based on string values. | | Further MySQL und MariaDB SQL String functions | CHAR | CHAR(Character code, [, Charset]) | More about CHAR Function |
