The CHAR_LENGTH SQL Function in MySQL and MariaDB - Length of string in characters |
|
| CHAR_LENGTH | Syntax: | CHAR_LENGTH(String) | Return value: | INTEGER | Synonyms: | CHARACTER_LENGTH | Function type: | String function | |
| | The CHAR_LENGTH() function returns the length of "String" in number of characters.
If the "String" contains characters with more than one byte, the return value does not increase, in contrast to the LENGTH() function.
To get the length of a "String" in number of bytes the LENGTH() function should be used.
If the character set of the argument is Binary the function returns the number of bytes needed.
Numeric arguments are converted to strings.
If the value of the argument is NULL, the CHAR_LENGTH() function returns NULL. | SQL Examples for the CHAR_LENGTH function |

| The examples were created with the MyWAY SQL manager: | How to use the CHAR_LENGTH() function in MySQL and MariaDB databases | In MySQL and MariaDB, the CHAR_LENGTH() function can be used to return the number of characters in a given string. The function counts the number of characters, regardless of the character set used, and is useful when the number of characters in a string needs to be determined, for example to check input length, count characters for analysis, or perform string manipulations based on the number of characters. | | Further MySQL und MariaDB SQL String functions | CHAR | CHAR(Character code, [, Charset]) | More about CHAR Function |
