The RPAD SQL Function in MySQL and MariaDB - Pad string on the right side

RPADSyntax:RPAD(String, Length, String to append)
Return value:CHAR
Function type:String function
Function Description

The RPAD() function returns "String" with "Length" as the result, with the missing characters being filled with "String to append" on the right side.

If "Length" is less than the length of "String", "String" is returned truncated to the "Length". This then corresponds to the function LEFT().

If "String to append" is not specified, the RPAD() function pads with spaces.

Numeric values of "String" or "String to append" are interpreted as character strings.

If "String" or "String to append" is NULL, the RPAD() function returns NULL.

Before MariaDB 10.3.1, the "String to append" parameter was mandatory.

As of MariaDB 10.3.6 with SQL_MODE=Oracle, NULL is returned if the result is empty.

The Oracle mode version of the function can be accessed outside of Oracle mode by using then RPAD_ORACLE() function.

How to use the RPAD() function in MySQL and MariaDB databases

In MySQL and MariaDB, the RPAD() function is used to add a string with a specific character of a certain length from the right side. The function is useful when you need to ensure that a string is of a specific length. RPAD() can be used to align data, format output, or prepare data for display purposes.
