The LENGTH SQL Function in MySQL and MariaDB - Length of string in bytes |
|
| LENGTH | Syntax: | LENGTH(String) | Return value: | INTEGER | Synonyms: | OCTET_LENGTH, LENGTHB | Function type: | String function | |
| | The LENGTH() function returns the length of "String" in required bytes.
If the "String" contains characters with more than one byte, the return value increases accordingly.
To get the length of a "String" in number of characters the function CHAR_LENGTH() should be used.
Numeric arguments are converted to strings.
If the value of the argument is NULL, the LENGTH() function returns NULL.
As of MariaDB version 10.3, LENGTH() returns the number of characters if the ORACLE mode is set in SQL_MODE for the server.
The OCTET_LENGTH() function can then be used to return the size of a "String" in bytes. | SQL Examples for the LENGTH function |

| The examples were created with the MyWAY SQL manager: | How to use the LENGTH() function in MySQL and MariaDB databases | In MySQL and MariaDB the LENGTH() function can be used to get the length of a string in bytes. The function calculates the number of bytes required to store the string. LENGTH() is useful for various purposes, such as calculating memory requirements, analyzing data sizes, or performing byte-level operations. | | Further MySQL und MariaDB SQL String functions | CHAR | CHAR(Character code, [, Charset]) | More about CHAR Function |
